Our Story

NPC’s history shows that while the mission of the church stays the same, its institutional life is always changing.  The National Presbyterian Church was named in 1947.  It grew out of a merger between two downtown DC churches:  First Presbyterian Church on Capitol Hill (founded 1795) and the Church of the Covenant in Dupont Circle (founded 1885).   In the late 1960’s, NPC moved to its present location.

Seeing the Light through the Stained Glass Windows of National Presbyterian Church

In October 1967 President Dwight D. Eisenhower laid the foundation for the new sanctuary where worship is enhanced by 53 faceted abstract windows from Willet Studio--one of the largest collections of this modern technique--and a dozen older traditional windows from Tiffany and Booth Studios.
