Devotionals by Dr. M. Craig Barnes

Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near. -- Isaiah 55:6

In every life there are sacred moments when the thin veneer of ordinary routine is pulled back just long enough to offer a glimpse of holiness.

While driving home from work one evening you pass a terrible accident. It occurs to you that the drivers of those mangled cars weren't planning on having an accident. They were planning on going home to make dinner, do laundry, and maybe help a child with homework. But they may never do any of that again. Later that night, you get on the phone and call everyone in your family just to say that you love them.

Or while sitting near a crowded airport gate, impatiently waiting to board your delayed plane, you notice a small child in a wheelchair across from you. She gives you the biggest smile and says, "Hi." Suddenly, you don't care about the plane anymore.

Or while eating breakfast on a cold, gray, winter morning, a sparrow lands on your kitchen window sill. You wonder how the tiny thing survives out there, but then you remember the verse about God feeding the birds, which are not nearly so important to him as you are.

Don't ignore these odd little moments of life that give you pause. They could be your only opportunity in the day to see that God is nearer than he often seems. Seeing that will change everything about the day.
