On October 18, 2009 NPC's fellowship hall was filled with more than 150 people who came together for fun, food, and service at our Church-as-a-Mission Potluck Dinner: A Call to Serve Our City. We enjoyed a veritable feast with a healthy dose of fellowship and a little singing before Doug Learned and Earl Palmer spoke to us about ministering to those in need in our own city. Rev. Palmer spoke of his 90-year-old father gleaning and told us to just go out and "do it" (serve those in need in our city). We then broke into small groups to hear brief presentations by the organizations that help those in need and had the opportunity to sign up for various volunteer activities. At the end of the evening, lots of helping hands (especially from the children in attendance!) prepared care kits, school supply kits, and food bags that were distributed by Martha's Table and the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place. We'd like to express a word of thanks from the Urban Missions Committee to everyone who helped make the October 18 event a success. We have been abundantly blessed!
The five DC organizations are listed below, along with further volunteer and contact information. Whether or not you had the chance to be with us on October 18, we invite you to become a part of NPC's Urban Missions efforts.
